Dryer vents are important pieces of equipment. They allow for your dryer to work by releasing hot air and moisture to the exterior of your home. Without a properly working dryer vent, your dryer will have great difficulty trying to dry your clothing. It is important to be able to properly care for your dryer vent in order for the dryer to work appropriately.
Why Care For Your Dryer Vent?
The dryer vent is responsible for removing moisture from the dryer. This means that there are times when moisture can get stuck in the vent, potentially causing mold to form. Mold in your dryer vent could potentially cause you and your family to get sick. It is important to take the precautions to care for your dryer vent in order to avoid issues with mold appearing. A buildup of dust and lint could also occur. If this happens, your dryer vent could be at risk of causing a fire.
Luckily, dryer vents are not overly difficult to clean and care for. You can clean your dryer vent out on your own, but for a convenient and efficient dryer vent cleaning you may want to consider getting your dryer vent cleaned by the professionals. We at Sierra Vista Maintenance recommend cleaning your dryer vent at least once a year.
Maintaining Your Dryer Vent
Even though it is important to get your dryer vent cleaned out once or twice a year, there are still steps that you can take to maintain your dryer vent. Making sure to keep your lint collector clear is extremely important. Cleaning the lint trap each time you run a load will drastically reduce the chances of your dryer vent becoming clogged. Keeping your dryer vent cleaned out is crucial to helping your dryer work properly.
Cleaning Out The Dryer Vent
The first step to take if you decide to care for your dryer vent on your own is to disconnect the dryer and detach the dryer duct. It is important to unplug the dryer and to turn off the gas valve if the dryer is a gas dryer. The dryer vent should be located on the back side of the dryer. There should be a duct running into the wall that can be detached.
Get Your Vacuum Ready
The second step for cleaning out the dryer vent is to get your vacuum and to attach your favorite nozzle that will fit into the vent. Use the hose attachment to draw out the excess lint and dust from around the inside of the dryer vent. You can also use your hands to pull out any obvious lint from the front side of the vent.
Use A Brush
If your dryer vent seems to be located in a spot that is difficult to reach or is too long to clean out with the vacuum nozzle, it may be beneficial to clean it out using a rotating or flexible brush. Set a tarp or garbage can beneath the vent in order to minimize the mess. Move the brush in and out of the dryer vent and as far as you can. The last thing that you will need to do after the vent has been sufficiently cleaned out would be to reconnect the dryer duct and plug the dryer back in.
